| Complaints aside, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is exactly what it sets out to be: a better version of the original. If you loved the first one, there's enough added value to justify picking this game up, even though it feels a little dated now, and its price is pretty steep. But if you're one of those people who felt that Castlevania should've never made the jump into 3D, Legacy of Darkness will do only a little more than the original in convincing you otherwise. |

| A neat idea which was one of only two N64 games(the other being "Densha de Go! 64") to use the N64 microphone, which had problems picking up speech from older players. Unfortunately, no current emulators have managed to emulate the microphone, making this game impossible past the title screen. |

| The game differs from most other RPGs in that the experience system is not based upon a traditional "level-up" model. Instead, experience is gained for specific stats based on how the player performs in battle. If the player gets hit a lot for instance defense will increase. The player can also find spirits for magic upgrades. Whenever the player finds one of these wispy white spirits, they can choose an element of magic to upgrade (from Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind). Leveling up these elements grants the player with new attacks and strengthens existing ones. The game's difficulty could be regarded as beginner-level for the genre. Later in the game, the difficulty raises to an expert difficulty. Of note, the game has no money system. |

You pilot a ship dubbed 'Arwing' and fight alongside your fellow co-pilots as you defeat enemies and bosses on your way across the Lylat system, leading up to the final battle with Andross, an evil bent scientist who has declared war on Lylat. Depending on choices you make or certain objectives that you can meet, your path from your beginning planet (Corneria) to the final level (Venom) can differ greatly from game to game. Not tomention a good ending, and a bad ending, depending on which path you take before reaching Venom.
Also, great multiplayer 3D dogfighting. |
